Beginning of the Adventure
-Heaven-sent creativity and exceptional drive-
The true test of excellent outdoor gear is whether it can perform its role effectively even in the great outdoors. In the field, one never knows what might happen, and sometimes, equipment failure can even endanger lives.
While Hunting World is often perceived as a brand for urban use in Japan, its true essence is that of an authentic outdoor brand, born from the real-life experiences of a single adventurer in harsh natural environments. Consequently, the brand's products have consistently earned the high trust and support of outdoorsmen worldwide.
That adventurer is none other than founder and designer Robert M. Lee, also known as Bob Lee (honorifics omitted below). The true value of this brand is underpinned by his way of life and philosophy, and that remains unwavering even today.
Bob Lee was born in 1928 on Long Island, New York, to a father who was a dentist. From a young age, he enjoyed horseback riding, shooting, and fishing. He learned to tie flies at the tender age of nine, and by twelve, he had astonishingly become a professional fly tyer. What's more, his clients included prominent anglers from industry and finance. Many of his creations featured new fly patterns, and one of his salmon flies was even featured with an illustration in the specialized fishing magazine "Field & Stream." This article was written by Ari McClain, a world-renowned author and angler.

Apparently, he devised his own eyeglass standard system at around 10 years old, and designed and built an ultra-high-velocity rifle cartridge at 14, so his talent for innovation and ingenuity was extraordinary. Bob spent his high school years in upstate New York, enjoying outdoor recreation in his free time and on weekends. He later enlisted in the military, and fortunately was stationed in Alaska, where he spent most of his short leaves fishing and never neglecting to tie flies. As he became more familiar with outdoor recreation, he gradually began to dream of "going to Africa." This dream came true in 1955, when he traveled to Uganda and Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania) in East Africa. Bob was completely captivated by Africa's vast wilderness during his several-month journey, and it was from here that he began his career as an adventurer.

In 1959, he established "Lee Expeditions," a company that organized big game hunting, photographic safaris, and expeditions in Angola, in the southwestern part of the continent. The Angolan government granted them a business license for a vast area in the southeastern part of the country. This led the company to also initiate wildlife surveys, with Bob himself leading the planning and execution. Furthermore, based on these surveys, the first game bird and animal management project in Africa was commercialized. As a result, poaching dramatically decreased, wildlife populations increased, and employment opportunities for local people were created, making it a model for similar ventures in Africa.
As Bob continued these activities, he grew disillusioned with existing outdoor equipment, and using his creativity and manual dexterity, he created a variety of gear. Naturally, these were items Bob made for himself, but as they gradually became a topic of conversation among friends and acquaintances, and orders poured in, he decided to commercialize them. In 1965, he finally established Hunting World.
Incidentally, one item Bob was particularly dissatisfied with was bags. Existing canvas bags absorbed dust and sand, making them unable to adequately protect the camera equipment stored within in the dry savanna. So, after leaving Angola due to civil war and returning to the United States, Bob began working on developing new materials. After much trial and error, in 1972, he finally succeeded in creating a fabric that met this requirement.
This was Hunting World's unique fabric and the brand's iconic "Batue Cloth."

The inventive genius Bob displayed in his youth blossomed fully during his time in Africa. For instance, the Land Rover (top three photos) that he heavily used as a safari vehicle underwent various modifications to its mechanics and onboard equipment to make it more heavy-duty and comfortable. Furthermore, the items he created, regardless of category, were incredibly diverse, including tents and their accessories, rifles, and large bags.

The record of his adventurous journeys in Africa was compiled into a single volume and published in the US in 1960 under the title "Safari Today." This safari hunting guide, Bob's first book, was filled with text and numerous photographs of wildlife that he himself had taken, delighting readers.
At the time of its publication, it received extremely high praise from outdoor magazines and other media outlets alike, and even today, it remains an indispensable basic text for research on Africa's wilderness and the wildlife that inhabits it.

Bob was a man of many talents—a brave explorer, an outstanding entrepreneur, an innovative product planner, and a unique designer. But he also possessed exceptional skill and artistic sensibility in photography, truly professional-level as a photographer. One only needs to glance at his works like "Safari Today" to confirm this fact through the countless wildlife photographs documented within.
